The role of the four directional divine beasts of Chinese Taoism in Feng Shui.
In traditional Chinese culture, the Taoist Four Directional Guardian Beasts—the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise—are one of the core theoretical frameworks. They are primarily used to analyze the energetic patterns of the surrounding environment and to guide architectural and spatial layout, with the aim of “shielding from harsh winds, gathering vital energy, and achieving harmony between heaven and humanity.” Their application spans both the macro level, such as city planning and site selection, and the micro level, including residential and interior layout.
